Questions:

1. What is Vector Art

Well, the official explanation is here, but to be honest that may confuse you a bit. Vector refers to the fact that the image is built out of co-ordinates, as you might expect of an image constructed in a computer. I use an application called Flash; drawing images such as these is not it's intended use, but I find I can work in a more intuitive way at the drawing stage using this rather then illustrator for instance.

2. Why would I want it?

To be different?, I am noticing that friends prefer to use their image, rather than a real picture on certain social networking sites. It is you and dependant on source picture and resolution can be almost indistinguishable from a normal photograph, but really, it is a drawn portrait and I think that they find that less revealing.

These Vector Art Portraits are also a good entry point to the world of portraiture, these images are not produced using any photoshop filters or other automated shenanigans, they are hand drawn and though they are pretty much WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get), they still have been created in a craftsman like way. It is in my interest to make you look as good in your picture as I possibly can.

3. Ok How much?

Prices start from £650+ Vat per figure dependant on requirements*, this is an important thing to consider as I will present with either, a printed and if you require, framed picture or digital jpeg file, the jpeg file is sized for use.

*If you just want a digital image, be prepared for me to ask you what you want it for. Digital files are presented as a 'per use' licence, that is to say, I expect you to declare your intention for the image and it gets prepared accordingly. For most of you this should not pose any issues and unless a commercial use is requested, I cannot see many cases where an additional payment will be required.

I deal a lot with on-line images, Intellectual Property and umm... 'nicking stuff' in my other lines of work and I wish to keep this endeavour free of such bad karma because, even though I am drawing from a picture and not directly from life, you do get to know your subject during the time, it gets a bit personal and I do not want to ruin that.

4. How do you do it?

I have a tutorial on how it is done, here.

The 'art' in the images comes from the drawn 'wire frame' that eventually gets filled with colour. It takes a lot of time and concentration to see the shapes in the image and often when I finish a piece I feel that I have really got to know some of the aspects of the person being drawn, however it can also be an incredibly frustrating experience. So it doesn't get rushed.

5. What do you need?

Several good quality photographs (from a decent digital camera, 6meg+), the sharper the better. Despite how good they claim to be, Camera phone images are not good enough.

Let me choose the best one to work from. If needs be, I can photoshop up a good source image from several others.

One of the images in the preview is from a digital shot of an existing photograph, so if, as was the case here, the person is no longer with us, an image can still be produced.

6. How Long will it take?

4 - 6 weeks is my preferred time frame for these images. Though 2 weeks is the absolute minimum and even then I might be grumpy about it.

Large format printing is completed by an external company and I frame the images myself, should you require it and are in mailing distance from London. I have recently printed an image to canvas and that seems to work well to.
